Desert coolers

The desert format is the classic high-airflow design: a large cabinet, a big fan and deep pads on multiple sides. It is normally placed at a window or doorway so it draws relatively dry outside air rather than recirculating room air.

It delivers the strongest cooling of the domestic formats, and it depends most on ventilation. Placed in a closed room drawing its own exhaust, its performance collapses.

Tower coolers

Tower units trade airflow for footprint. A tall, slim cabinet fits where a desert cooler will not, which matters in flats and offices.

Expect less airflow and a smaller tank, meaning more frequent refills for the same running hours. They suit rooms where a person is fairly close to the unit.

Personal coolers

Personal coolers are sized to cool the immediate area around one or two people rather than the room. Judged as room coolers they look weak; judged as spot cooling at a desk or bedside they do their job with very little power.

Commercial and industrial formats

Above domestic sizes the design priorities change. Airflow and throw matter more than cabinet styling, tanks get larger or are plumbed to a supply, and pads must be easy to reach because dusty environments need frequent cleaning.

What matters across every format

Whatever the cabinet, cooling comes from air passing through a wetted pad. Pad material and depth, even water distribution across the pad face, and how easily you can clean the tank affect performance more than the shape of the housing.

Which is better, a tower cooler or a desert cooler?

Can a personal cooler cool a whole room?

Not usually. Personal coolers are designed to cool the area immediately around one or two people. For a whole room, size on air changes rather than choosing the smallest unit available.

Do commercial coolers need a permanent water connection?

For continuous running it is strongly preferable. Large units consume water steadily, and manual refilling becomes the limiting factor on a full shift.
