Steam is commonly used in corrugated-board production to transfer controlled heat to preheaters, heated rolls and other sections specified by the corrugator manufacturer. The boiler must support the required pressure and steam flow while the distribution and condensate systems deliver that energy to the machine.
A boiler should never be selected only from board tonnes per day or corrugator width. Production speed, paper combination, simultaneous users, warm-up practice and system condition can change the real steam demand. What information is required to size the boiler?

The corrugator supplier should provide the process demand. A competent boiler engineer then evaluates the connected load and complete system.
Rated boiler output versus usable steam at the machine
Rated steam output is meaningful only when its basis is stated. Ask for the feedwater temperature, steam pressure, fuel condition and test method behind the rating. The useful result is stable steam delivered to the process under the agreed operating conditions.
Capacity can be lost or demand increased by:
- Cold start-up and heating a large mass of equipment
- Uninsulated or oversized steam piping
- Failed traps, waterlogging and poor drainage
- Leaks and uncontrolled bypasses
- Low feedwater temperature or limited condensate return
- Scale, fouling or combustion problems
- Frequent load changes beyond the selected burner and control range
- Blowdown and water-treatment requirements
An oversized boiler can also perform poorly if it cycles frequently at low demand. Request a load profile, not just one peak number.
How should fuel be selected?
Fuel choice affects operating cost, storage, emissions, maintenance, controls and site approvals. Compare fuels using current local quotations and the complete delivered-energy cost.

Do not compare boiler prices while assuming different fuels or commercial boundaries. A low equipment price can be offset by storage, handling, stack, emissions or electrical infrastructure.
Pressure, steam quality and distribution
The boiler pressure must be coordinated with the pressure required at the corrugator and the losses across piping and controls. Increasing boiler pressure is not a substitute for correcting an undersized or waterlogged distribution system.
Dry, consistently supplied steam supports predictable heat transfer. Pipe sizing, insulation, separators, trap selection, drainage, pressure control and condensate management belong in the system design. A qualified steam-system engineer should review the layout and operating procedure.
Feedwater, treatment and condensate return
Water quality affects scale, corrosion, carryover and boiler life. Obtain a water analysis and a treatment recommendation for the selected boiler and operating pressure. The package may require softening or other treatment, a feed tank, chemical dosing, blowdown management and monitoring.
Returning clean condensate can conserve heat and treated water, but contaminated condensate should not be returned without an appropriate assessment and protection strategy. Define who designs and supplies the feedwater and condensate system before ordering.

Mark every exclusion. Two suppliers may quote very different boundaries while describing both offers as a “complete boiler.”
Compliance and inspection responsibilities
Boilers are regulated pressure equipment. In India, purchasers should review the current Boilers Act information published by DPIIT, applicable Indian Boiler Regulations and the requirements of the relevant state authority. The 2025 Act replaced the earlier 1923 Act, so project documents should identify the current legal and regulatory basis rather than copying an old specification.
For projects specifying American requirements, the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code covers areas including construction, inspection and certification. A reference to ASME does not mean a product is certified or stamped; the purchaser must state the required code section, edition, certification and jurisdictional acceptance, and the supplier must confirm the offered scope in writing.
International buyers should identify the installation-country authority, insurer and inspection body before manufacturing begins.
Maintenance and total cost of ownership
Compare the cost of fuel or electricity, water treatment, chemicals, operators, inspection, planned service, spares, cleaning, downtime and statutory compliance. Ask how the boiler will operate across normal and low-load periods and what skills are needed locally.
A practical maintenance plan should cover authorised inspections, water-quality records, burner or electrical-system checks, safety-device testing, blowdown, feed system, traps, leaks, insulation and combustion or energy-use trends. Follow the manufacturer, competent authority and applicable code; a website checklist cannot replace them.
