Machine capacity is often presented as one headline number. That number is not enough to plan a cooling pad factory because every product size consumes a different amount of paper, oven space, gluing time and cutting time. The useful figure is saleable finished pads per effective production hour for the sizes your customers will buy.
Start with monthly saleable demand
Prepare a product mix before contacting a machine supplier. List each pad thickness, height, length and flute type, then estimate units per month from real customer enquiries. Keep confirmed orders, likely demand and speculative demand separate.
For an initial calculation, use:
Required gross rate = monthly good-pad target / (workdays x shifts x hours x uptime x first-pass yield)
If the target is 12,000 good pads per month, the factory runs 25 days, one 8-hour shift, operates effectively for 75% of scheduled time and achieves 95% first-pass yield, the planning rate is about 84 pads per effective hour. Why rated speed and finished output differ
- Product size: a tall or thick pad uses more paper and curing volume than a small cooler pad.
- Product mix: changing flute setup, paper width, adhesive or cutting dimensions consumes time.
- Drying and curing: upstream sheets can wait if the oven or curing stage is undersized.
- Material variation: paper moisture, resin uptake and glue viscosity can reduce stable speed.
- Inspection and rework: output that fails dimensions or bonding is not saleable capacity.
- Maintenance: cleaning, lubrication and planned replacement of wear parts require scheduled time.
Balance every process stage
A typical honeycomb cooling pad production line includes paper cutting or unwinding, resin treatment, drying, corrugation, gluing, block curing and final sawing. The slowest stage controls the factory.
Ask for output assumptions at each stage using the same paper grade and pad dimensions. If corrugation produces sheets faster than the oven can cure them, work-in-progress grows without increasing final sales. Balanced capacity is more valuable than one unusually fast machine.
Plan peak demand without oversizing
Cooling-pad sales can be seasonal. Calculate an average requirement and a peak-season requirement. Options for peaks include a second shift, finished-goods stock before summer, faster changeovers or modular expansion. Buying a permanently oversized line increases capital, floor-space and maintenance cost during quiet months.
A reasonable capacity buffer protects against order variation and planned maintenance, but it should be supported by a sales forecast. Do not use a universal percentage simply because another factory does.

- Good pads required per month and peak month
- Workdays, shifts and hours available
- Paper width, GSM and proposed raw-material source
- Available floor space, power and heating utilities
- Acceptable changeover time and future expansion plan
- Quality checks and first-pass-yield target
